THE BASICS

Good questions.

What is Bew?

Bew is a Mac browser for people who build the web. It runs on Gecko, the engine behind Firefox, and adds workspaces, split views, a terminal, developer tools, and widgets made for development work.

Why Gecko?

Gecko gives Bew a full, independent web engine with Firefox’s developer tools, password manager, and sync. Bew builds its workspace, sidebar, and developer features on top of it.

Which Macs can run it?

The Gecko build requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There are separate downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Can I bring my data from another browser?

Yes. Bew can import from Safari, Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Firefox, and Zen, and from a password CSV file. Nothing is imported until you choose the browsers and categories and start the import.

Does everything stay on my Mac?

Browser data lives in your local profile, and Bew turns off Mozilla’s telemetry and automatic updater; Bew’s own updater only asks GitHub for new releases. Websites still receive ordinary web traffic, and features you connect, such as Firefox Sync, Gmail, Calendar, or GitHub, talk to those services. Our privacy page explains the details.

How do I update?

Download the newer DMG from the download page and replace the app in Applications. Your profile stays where it is.

A FEW THINGS TO TRY

Back to building.

My local server does not appear. What should I check?

Make sure the Local Servers widget is turned on in Widget Settings and that the server is running and listening for HTTP or HTTPS on this Mac. Non-HTTP services are not listed. HTTPS servers need a certificate trusted by your Mac.

Send to Phone shows a code, but my phone can’t open the page.

Your phone and Mac need to be on the same network, and the development server has to listen on the network, not only on localhost. The popover says when the server only listens on this Mac and, for known frameworks, which flag binds it to the network.

Why doesn’t Lineage find where a value comes from?

Lineage works on Vue and Nuxt development pages. Production builds remove the component information it needs. To connect a value with its source files, Bew also needs the project folder, which it finds from the components or the local server list.

Verification isn’t showing my codes.

Make sure you used a Google app password, not your account password; app passwords need 2-Step Verification on the Google account. A rejected app password stops only that account; add it again from the card menu. Each check is written to bew-verification.log in your profile, without the codes themselves.

Where should I start with a bug report?

Include the app version, macOS version, your Mac’s chip (Apple Silicon or Intel), steps to reproduce, and whether the issue also occurs in a fresh workspace. Remove private URLs, cookies, access tokens, and personal information from logs or screenshots before sharing them. In Network, Copy Bug Report redacts secrets for you.

Direct email support will be listed here with the Bew launch. For now, find the project’s public updates on GitHub.
